As more and more of Northamptonshire's green fields disappear under roads and housing developments, the old historic field names are being forgotten. Field names were once the only way that farmers could identify and organise their working land and names were usually based on the type of soil, natural flora and fauna, shape and size and archaeological features. In 1939, all the field names around Collingtree were recorded by Jim Patrick on the map shown below. Since the building of the M1 Motorway in 1959, many of these fields are now outside the Collingtree parish boundary.
